Top 10 Tuesdays: Top 10 2016 Book Releases that I Wish I Read Right Away

screen-shot-2017-02-28-at-10-07-31-pm

It’s not Tuesday. I made my own prompt. But I’m doing this anyway! Ha! 🙂

Since Top Ten Tuesday will be on hiatus until March 7th, I decided to just make a list of my top 2016 releases that I wished I was able to read, but sadly missed. There were just so many good releases last year and I hope I could catch up on ALL of them this year! Let’s get started!

1. The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicola Yoon

28763485

Nicola Yoon is recommended by practically everyone in Book Twitter, in BookTube, even all my blogger friends are so into her works, and I just can’t let this year pass without reading them! 🙂 When The Sun Is Also A Star was released last year, I fully intended to get a copy and read it right away, however it was Bar Exams month and I just had to put it off for a while. I’m really excited to read this one, though, and I can’t wait! ❤

2. Walk The Edge by Katie McGarry

17928147

Katie McGarry’s works are probably one of those that are always in my TBR list but never had the chance of reading. It always makes me sad whenever I had to bypass her works, and I intend to remedy that this year. I, however, need to read Nowhere But Here (the first book!) first before getting into Walk The Edge. 🙂

3. Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

29845906.jpg

This book, guys, this book! I never heard of anything bad about it, just all praises. All praises! The thing is, I don’t KNOW anything about it, too! Ha! I’ve never had the chance of looking into it’s synopsis in Goodreads, and I think I want it to remain that way. I wanna be surprised and I think this is the book that will best do the job!

4. My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton & Jodi Meadows

22840421.jpg

We all know that Lady Jane Grey never had her happy ending, but this book is just about to change history for her! My Lady Jane gives a comical and entertaining twist on what really happened in the history of England. It’s been a long while since I’ve read something that really made me laugh out loud and I think this might be the next best thing to make me LOL. 😀

5. P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

25486998

Ahhh, Kasie West probably holds one of the top tiers when it comes to writing good YA contemporaries. Her novels are just so fluffy and bright and with a really really good balance of finding oneself while at the same time  finding the beauty of relationships! ❤ I can’t wait to get into another one of Kasie West’s pieces and just fall in love again!

6. The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

17838528.jpg

So far I have only read one Morgan Matson book, and I know, what am I even doing with my life? I hear ya. And again, this curse is going to be remedied sooner because I ain’t finishing the first half of 2017 without getting The Unexpected Everything in my hands!! I believe this is another Matson book about finding oneself in the midst of everything going haywire. I just love this kind of story lines as I deeply relate to them. Can’t wait! ❤

7. This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

23299512.jpg

One of my resolutions for last year is to explore and expand to reading the works of V.E. Schwab. I never got the chance, though, and you don’t know how it is frustrating me to my wits end! I want to read V.E. Schwabs works!! I want to so bad that I think something is wrong with me because until now I don’t have any of her books yet! 😦 The frustration is again fired up when July (or August?) last year, she published yet again another book that everybody seems to be loving and raving about! Sigh. Me reading This Savage Song should happen soon!

8. Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

21414439-2

The second book of this series has just been released this year and I really wanna get into this world! I have been hearing so many good things about Truthwitch, and it’s going to be a perfect entry for my YA Fantasy challenge this year! 🙂 Witches and angsty characters? Game on!

9. Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

20983362

I’ve not read any Time Travel novel before, and I am honestly intrigued about how they go. Enter Passenger. I have long been hearing about Alexandra Bracken and The Darkest Minds series (and this is another series I have yet to devour), and I definitely became very very interested when I learned that she’s coming up with a time travel book. I have really high  expectations for Passenger and I hope it doesn’t disappoint! Plus, guys, this cover! My eyes are feasting! 🙂

10. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

25494343

The main reason why I have not picked this up is because I have not started with the Mortal Instruments series. I know, guys, what have I been doing with my life, AGAIN!? However, I have read the Infernal Devices, though, and I loved them! 🙂 This year I am starting with City of Bones, and I hope I could binge read them throughout the year! 🙂 I definitely can’t wait to get into Lady Midnight after that! Gah, so many books!!!

That’s it, guys! I know there are so many good releases from last year that are not in this list! Let’s talk about them below! 🙂 I would love to hear your most anticipated releases in 2016 but were not able to get into! 🙂

2016 in Review: My top 10!

Screen Shot 2017-02-16 at 1.07.01 PM.png

You know how everybody seems to be disappointed with 2016 in general? Yeah? Well, that’s how I’m feeling about it too and I just can’t wait for it to end! I’d say it’s not a very good year for me – save for the fact that I graduated from law school and I hurdled the bar exams this year! – the rest of 2016, though, was a total mess. And that includes the books I’ve read.

I honestly thought of not making a top 10 since I only read 27 books this year. I know, I know. Am I even a real book blogger, reading only 20 something books in 365 days? Like I said, it has been a rough year.

Anyway, this year was mostly dedicated to New Adult and a number of middle grade ones. Let’s get started!

10.

sidebarred-for-web

There was a time when Jake Becker had it all together. He was controlled, driven, ruthless—in and out of the courtroom.

Then, six irresistible orphans and their heartbreakingly beautiful aunt crashed into his perfectly ordered life. They changed everything. They changed him. Now he’s a husband, an upstanding member of society, a father figure—a family man. And he’s pretty damn good at it.

Sure, he has to referee sibling smackdowns, re-learn algebra, ensure his clients stay of jail, and keep his wife happy—but it finally feels like he’s got it together again….

So, of course something has to screw it all up. It’s huge. Life-changing. Kind of terrifying.

And it will be the most amazing, perfect thing he’ll ever do.

Tenth in my list is Emma Chase’s Sidebarred. If you’ve been following this blog for a while now, you would know that Emma Chase is MY queen of New Adult! I love everything she writes about and I’d basically stop everything when she publishes a new book! Sidebarred is a novella for Appealed, the story of Jake and Chelsea and their lovely kids! If you are into lawyer-y kind of romance, and if you’re looking for a good laugh and heartwarming tale of love, this one is definitely for you!

9thMAY16-Smut-by-Karina-Halle

What happens when the kink between the pages leads to heat between the sheets?

All Blake Crawford wants is to pass his creative writing course, get his university degree, and take over his dad’s ailing family business. What Amanda Newland wants is to graduate at the top of her class, as well as finally finish her novel and prove to her family that writing is a respectful career.

What Blake and Amanda don’t want is to be paired up with each other for their final project, but that’s exactly what they both get when they’re forced to collaborate on a writing piece. Since Amanda thinks Blake is a pushy asshole (with a panty-melting smirk and British accent) and Blake thinks Amanda has a stick up her ass (though it’s a brilliant ass), they fight tooth and nail until they discover they write well together. They also may find each other really attractive, but that’s neither here nor there.

When their writing project turns out to be a success, the two of them decide to start up a secret partnership using a pen name, infiltrating the self-publishing market in the lucrative genre of erotica. Naturally, with so much heat and passion between the pages, it’s not long before their dirty words become a dirty reality. Sure, they still fight a lot, but at least there’s make-up sex now.

But even as they start to fall hard for each other, will their burgeoning relationship survive if their scandalous secret is exposed? Or are happily-ever-afters just a work of fiction?

Although the title suggests that it’s totally going to be a smutty read, it was way more than that! It isn’t just your typical smut novel without a plot. Both Blake and Amanda has their own story to tell, plus author Karina Halle delved into what really goes in the minds of erotica authors and how they do it! It’s just that we have a twist here and that’s for you to find out if you haven’t read this!

the-royals-paper-princess-cover-erin-watt-elle-kennedy-jen-frederick

From strip clubs and truck stops to southern coast mansions and prep schools, one girl tries to stay true to herself.
These Royals will ruin you…

Ella Harper is a survivor—a pragmatic optimist. She’s spent her whole life moving from town to town with her flighty mother, struggling to make ends meet and believing that someday she’ll climb out of the gutter. After her mother’s death, Ella is truly alone.

Until Callum Royal appears, plucking Ella out of poverty and tossing her into his posh mansion among his five sons who all hate her. Each Royal boy is more magnetic than the last, but none as captivating as Reed Royal, the boy who is determined to send her back to the slums she came from.

He might be right.

Wealth. Excess. Deception. It’s like nothing Ella has ever experienced, and if she’s going to survive her time in the Royal palace, she’ll need to learn to issue her own Royal decrees.

The mystery. The characters. The plot. I can’t say anything else anymore, guys! I just need you to read Paper Princess and let me know when you get to the ending. Because a cliff hanger has never been done this good!

7.

18667779A love letter to the craft and romance of film and fate in front of—and behind—the camera from the award-winning author of Hold Still.

A wunderkind young set designer, Emi has already started to find her way in the competitive Hollywood film world.

Emi is a film buff and a true romantic, but her real-life relationships are a mess. She has desperately gone back to the same girl too many times to mention. But then a mysterious letter from a silver screen legend leads Emi to Ava. Ava is unlike anyone Emi has ever met. She has a tumultuous, not-so-glamorous past, and lives an unconventional life. She’s enigmatic…. She’s beautiful. And she is about to expand Emi’s understanding of family, acceptance, and true romance.

You know you have a good novel in your hands when it speaks not only to your experiences but to your inner soul. It has the perfect formula of acceptance, hope, and self love. Nina LaCour also has a very poignant way of writing that every minor detail shouts a lot of meaning. I really enjoyed this book and I highly highly recommend it whether you’re trying to get over someone or just starting and hoping to find that one true love.

6.

24396876

After her best friend dies in a drowning accident, Suzy is convinced that the true cause of the tragedy must have been a rare jellyfish sting-things don’t just happen for no reason. Retreating into a silent world of imagination, she crafts a plan to prove her theory–even if it means traveling the globe, alone. Suzy’s achingly heartfelt journey explores life, death, the astonishing wonder of the universe…and the potential for love and hope right next door.

“The things is, a persons gets so few chances to really fix something, to make it right. When one of those opportunities comes along, you can’t overthink it. You’ve got to grab hold of it and cling to it with all your might, no matter how crazy it may seem.” – If you’re feeling down and lost and feels just you have nowhere to go, go get this one. It’s perfect.

5.

rithmatist-rev-colors

More than anything, Joel wants to be a Rithmatist. Rithmatists have the power to infuse life into two-dimensional figures known as Chalklings. Rithmatists are humanity’s only defense against the Wild Chalklings. Having nearly overrun the territory of Nebrask, the Wild Chalklings now threaten all of the American Isles.

As the son of a lowly chalkmaker at Armedius Academy, Joel can only watch as Rithmatist students learn the magical art that he would do anything to practice. Then students start disappearing—kidnapped from their rooms at night, leaving trails of blood. Assigned to help the professor who is investigating the crimes, Joel and his friend Melody find themselves on the trail of an unexpected discovery—one that will change Rithmatics—and their world—forever.

The Rithmatist is the first Sanderson book I’ve read and it just made me want to read everything BRANDON SANDERSON! It’s true what they say, you can never go wrong with Sanderson! Not only is this a middle grade fantasy, it also is a story of love, loss and getting back to your feet when everything just seems to be going against you. Definitely a must-read!

She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…

Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice…even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cockycaptain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.

…and it’s going to be oh so good

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

Remember when I told you that 2016 is mostly a year of NA’s? It’s actually The Deal that made me go back to NA without hesitation! After finishing this first installment, I knew I need to get into the rest of the series and I knew that whatever Elle Kennedy is publishing, I would get and read it. If you want a no-nonsense sexy story with perfectly lovable characters, you need to go grab this one!

3.

OneDaySoon-Amazon-683x1024He found me in blood and tears.
I stayed with him through darkness and fire.
We loved each other in the moment between innocence and bitter truth.
We were the kids easily ignored, who grew into adults we hardly knew.
We weren’t meant to last forever. And we didn’t.
He ran away.
I tried to move on.
Yet I never stopped thinking about the boy who had fought to keep me alive in a world that would have swallowed me whole. He was the past that I buried, but never forgot.

Until the day I found him again, years after believing I had lost him forever.

And in cold, resentful eyes, I saw the heart of the man who had been everything when I had nothing at all. So I vowed to hold onto the second chance that was stolen from the children we had been.

Sometimes fate is ugly. Life can be twisted.
And who we are can be ruined by who we once were.
For two people who had survived so much, we would have to learn how to hold on before we were forced to let go.

One Day Soon shattered me to pieces. It was a tale of love, loss, pain and sacrifice. This is probably the heaviest book I’ve read in the past couple of years, emotionally speaking. It does not only talk about young love and finding it again after how many years in the future. It is not your usual New Adult book, and I’m not even sure if it should be classified under that genre. I totally recommend this one! I think words aren’t enough to describe all the realizations I’ve had after closing its last page!

2.

16151178Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her—her identity, her spirit, her will to live—pay.

Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.

Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of an enigma she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she’s been hiding—or if he even wants to.

Just thinking about this one stirs something in me that I can’t even dare explain. It’s just perfect. The Sea of Tranquility is one beautiful piece of literature that I would even go on saying that books like this one is the reason why I read. So please please please if you haven’t picked this one up yet, plunge into it right now and don’t even think twice about it. I promise you, it’s going to be a perfectly wonderful experience!

collared-williams-ebook-2When a seventeen-year-old girl vanishes,
A community is shaken.
Parents turn desperate.
Friends hold vigils.
And the boy who loves her searches.

When a year goes by,
The community is recovering.
Parents feel hopeless.
Friends feel helpless.
And the boy who loves her continues his search.

When ten years go by,
The community has forgotten.
Parents cling to the past.
Friends move toward the future.
And the boy who loves her . . .
Brings her home.

Jade Childs spent ten years in captivity, but now that she’s back, the real battle for survival begins. The media shadows her. Flashbacks haunt her. Her old life evades her. Her so-called new life rejects her. She spent too many years in the dark to recognize the light. She spent too long repressing her feelings to remember how to express them. She spent a decade abandoning hope and cannot dare letting it back into her life. Jade’s not just defined by what happened to her—she’s collared to it.

When the twenty-seven-year-old woman is found,
A community wants to know the story,
Parents want to forget the story,
Friends want to be a part of the story,
And the man who still loves her faces the greatest challenge yet: letting her go.

I can’t ever imagine how my 2016 would be without having read Collared. I plunged into it without reading the back blurb and I was in awe with every page, with every word. I can’t stress enough how beautiful this book is and if there’s one title I would recommend over and over and over and over, it would be this!

Those are my top 10 of 2016, guys! I admit I didn’t read a lot and I wasn’t able to grab  many new releases and recently published ones, but I’m intending to fix that this year! Please leave a link of your 2016 review below, I can’t wait to see them!

Happy new year, everyone!

Lists: December 2016 TBR!

It’s been a long while since I last made a TBR list and actually followed it. So for the last month of 2016, for the sake of appearing to be being a good book blogger (Heh!), I’m making a list of the books I’m hoping to hit this month!

cover_ravenboys_300

I’m currently reading The Raven Boys, the first of the Raven Cycle series. Currently on the third chapter and definitely loving every single bit of it!

tog-nyt-cover

I have read Throne of Glass mid-2015 and I remember giving an almost perfect rating in Goodreads. I loved it so much that I intended to start Crown of Midnight right after closing the last page of the first book. Life has gotten in the way, though. I was reading it during my finals week and also while I was writing my thesis. So, ugh, I had to put the series down 😦 Anyway, now that I have all the time in the world, I’m re-reading Throne of Glass so I can binge read the rest of this series! ❤

18667779

I’ve been seeing Nina Lacour’s Everything Leads to You for sometime now in booktube and I have long been intrigued by it. I’m not sure if I’d pick this book up by myself, though, so it’s a really good thing this was chosen as our book-of-the-month over at Rainbow Bookclub!

If you are looking for a good LGBT-YA, I think this would be one good choice! Will definitely update you about my whole reading experience here!

29991719

I have long been a HUUUGE Emma Chase fan! I read every single one of her works right at their very time of release. Again this year, however, things were quite heavy with school so when Royally Screwed was published last October, I didn’t have a choice but to let it pass. Sigh. 😦

But now the time has come!! I finally have it in my hands and I just can’t wait to read it soonest! ❤

TheGoal-iBooks-424x650

The Goal is the 4th and final instalment of the Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy. The first three books are definitely the best NA romances I’ve had in months, and I am expecting no less for this one!

Elle Kennedy is definitely hitting what NA should be and I’m definitely reading whatever she publishes! ❤

Series Review: The Off-Campus Series by Elle Kennedy

screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-12-51-13-pm

The Off-Campus series is composed of four books – The Deal, The Mistake, The Score, and the yet unpublished The Goal. It revolves around the lives of hockey player-friends Garrett, Logan, Dean, and Tucker.

P.S. Never (ever!) judge books by their covers! Ha ha!

screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-12-58-45-pm

Let me start off by saying that The Deal sealed it all for me! After finishing this first installment, I knew I need to get into the rest of the series and I knew that whatever Elle Kennedy is publishing, I would get and read it. Hannah and Garrett’s story is probably the one closest to my heart. Hannah is perfect, very likeable and very smart. She’s a no-non sense person, practical, down to earth, I could go on and on saying all these positive things about her. Oh and she’s also very smart! I feel like I totally related to her because of how she’s willing to go great lengths for her crush (not Garrett, but some football guy!). Me loves my crushes too! Ha ha! Anyway, I just liked how likeable Hannah is, because with the boom of New Adult it now kinda rare to find a female lead who isn’t annoying and totally relatable.

Now Garrett. What can I say about this personification of perfection? At the beginning of the story, Garrett is almost flunking one of his subjects and he’s trapped in this dilemma. No, he’s not your typical I-don’t-study-beacuse-I-am-a-hockey-varsity kinda guy. In fact, he is acing all his subjects except for one (Philosophy! Which is totally acceptable, right?!) So he seeks the help of Hannah (because she’s acing it!) and the rest is history. 🙂 What I like most about Garrett is his sense of responsibility. He’s the captain of the team and he’ll do anything – anything! – for them. I think Garrett is the most mature out of all the guys in series and I just love how he’s got that balance of being the cool and hot guy while being the studious and responsible team captain. Again, my words escape me, but please know that The Deal is probably one of the best New Adult romances out there!

5/5!

The Mistake_zpsuukhxvrd

screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-12-58-33-pm

College junior John Logan can get any girl he wants. For this hockey star, life is a parade of parties and hook-ups, but behind his killer grins and easygoing charm, he hides growing despair about the dead-end road he’ll be forced to walk after graduation. A sexy encounter with freshman Grace Ivers is just the distraction he needs, but when a thoughtless mistake pushes her away, Logan plans to spend his final year proving to her that he’s worth a second chance.

Now he’s going to need to up his game…

After a less than stellar freshman year, Grace is back at Briar University, older, wiser, and so over the arrogant hockey player she nearly handed her V-card to. She’s not a charity case, and she’s not the quiet butterfly she was when they first hooked up. If Logan expects her to roll over and beg like all his other puck bunnies, he can think again. He wants her back? He’ll have to work for it. This time around, she’ll be the one in the driver’s seat…and she plans on driving him wild.

screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-12-58-45-pm

The Mistake is Logan’s story – one of Garrett’s best friends. Honestly, this one is probably my least favorite in the series. It started with Logan thinking that he has feelings for Hannah (yeap, Garrett’s girlfriend!) and I was feeling so off about it since then. It was probably only after the first quarter of the book that Logan stopped thinking about her and diverted his attention to Grace. Don’t get me wrong, Logan is not a villain and he’s certainly not a bad person! Logan is very very charming himself. He’s got lots of family issues and responsibilities and the way he deals with them would just make you wanna fall for him.

Grace, on the other hand though, is probably the least likeable female character in the series. I wasn’t able to connect much with her because I thought she was too plain and doesn’t have a voice of her own. Plain is cool, don’t get me wrong, I am a plain Jane myself – but Grace was easily forgettable 😦 I also found her kind of annoying and entitled? I dunno man, some of you might find her charming and innocent and it would be cool and perfect. Guess she just didn’t work out for me.

3.5/5!

He knows how to score, on and off the ice

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she’s going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di-Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

screen-shot-2017-02-16-at-12-58-45-pm

Oh boy, where do I even begin with this one? Dean Heyward-Di Laurentis. Just with his name, I was already sold. ie, hotel owners, business moguls from Manhattan!)  and he’s pretty much had and a problem free and perfect life since forever. Relationships are a no-no for him because of all the drama they entail – until he meets Allie.

Allie Hayes just broke up with her long time boyfriend. She’s the kind of girl who’s into long term relationships, romantic what-nots, and a believer of true and forever-lasting love. She’s a relationship kind of person and so hooking up with Dean Di Laurentis – the god of one night stands – is the last thing in her mind. I totally totally love Allie. She’s a girl who knows what she wants and does it! She’s so independent yet so vulnerable and I just totally related to her. Allie is super comparable with Hannah in the first book, if not better! I also love how this book showed how family oriented she is and how she’d do everything for her dad.

Oh and can I just say that every scene where Dean teaches public school kids hockey is just plain adorable and heart warming! I swooned every single time!

4.5/5!

She’s good at achieving her goals…
College senior Sabrina James has her whole future planned out: graduate from college, kick butt in law school, and land a high-paying job at a cutthroat firm. Her path to escaping her shameful past certainly doesn’t include a gorgeous hockey player who believes in love at first sight. One night of sizzling heat and surprising tenderness is all she’s willing to give John Tucker, but sometimes, one night is all it takes for your entire life to change.

But the game just got a whole lot more complicated

Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of twenty-two, he refuses to be a bench warmer. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist

The Goal is Tucker’s story and is to be released on September 26th 2016! Can’t wait to read and review it because of how The Score ended! It was such a good good cliff hanger!

So that’s it, guys! I hope you liked my mini review of each book in the series 🙂 The Off-Campus series is definitely one of the best New Adult series out there! 🙂 Totally recommend it!

Book Review: One Day Soon by A. Meredith Walters

Before I begin this review, I would already warn you right off the bat that I wouldn’t be able to give justice to the beauty of this book. My words wouldn’t be enough and I don’t think I’d be able to fully grasp in here how life-shattering and life-changing this book is. No, I am not exaggerating. I swear to heavens I am not.

He found me in blood and tears.

One Day Soon is one of our books of the month over at #NALitLoversPH, a fairly new group of book bloggers from the Philippines. We are composed of Pearl, Bea, Jam, Claire, Rechellyn, Allie, and yours truly. We are all kinda into new adult romance and we plan on reading at least a couple of books a month. Needless to say, everybody was just super excited to jumpstart this monthly read-alongs and so we all decided to pick One Day Soon by A.Meredith Walters as our first kill. The irony? It was the one that killed us. It wasn’t what we expected at all.

One Day Soon shattered me.

It was a tale of love, loss, pain, and sacrifice. Imogen Conner and Yoss Frazier have been so much in love in their younger years. They were inseparable, and it seemed that not even the universe could take them away from each other. They loved, and they loved so hard. But apparently fate has different plans and life decided to interfere and take its own course. Fifteen years later, however, Imogen and Yoss met again.

This is probably the heaviest book I’ve read in the past couple of years, emotionally speaking. Lately, I have been veering away from overly emotional stories because I can’t afford to be emotionally unstable while reviewing for the bar 🙂 But I guess reading this one is sorta really meant to happen. One Day Soon does not only talk about young love and finding it again after how many years in the future. It is not your usual New Adult book, and I’m not even sure if it should be classified under that genre.

Screen Shot 2016-08-19 at 1.23.23 AM

It touches on so many social issues that are so real and so raw that you could actually feel Imi and Yoss like they’re just there, real and breathing. I know I don’t make any sense because I haven’t really discussed what happened and what real-and-raw stuff I’m talking about, it’s just I’m afraid I’m going to have to spoil you guys if I talk about all those things.

Reading One Day Soon made me realize that I could lose everything in a snap of a finger. It also made me realize that love isn’t at all happy – it is painful, it is difficult, it is so consuming to the point of destruction. But we want it, anyway. We need it.

I have so many things to say about One Day Soon, I swear. In fact, I am writing this review 24 hours after I closed the last page just to give myself some sort of composure to talk about it properly, but I guess I need so much more than a day to recover.

Guys, I totally totally recommend this one. You are not gonna believe everything that’s happened and how it all turned out in the end. It was heartbreakingly beautiful. Sooo soo beautiful. Definitely giving it 5 stars!

Author Review: Penelope Ward

So I have been in a real good New Adult streak the past couple of weeks and what can I say? I. am. having. a. BLAST! I have been discovering a lot of old and new NA authors and despite the tropes and the same as usual plot twists that’s happening to everybody and their mother, I am surprisingly having a really good time reading them! And with the rate I’m going, I’m not sure if I’d have the time to review them individually so I decided to just do some sort of a quick author review, if that makes sense?

I have read two of Penelope Ward’s books in probably under 4 days (I am a slow reader, I know!) and the reviews couldn’t be any more different!

Sharing a summer house with a hot-as-hell roommate should be a dream come true, right?
Not when it’s Justin…the only person I’d ever loved…who now hates me.
When my grandmother died and left me half of the house on Aquidneck Island, there was a catch: the other half would go to the boy she helped raise.
The same boy who turned into the teenager whose heart I broke years ago.
The same teenager who’s now a man with a hard body and a hardass personality to match.
I hadn’t seen him in years, and now we’re living together because neither one of us is willing to give up the house.

The worst part? He didn’t come alone.

I’d soon realize there’s a thin line between love and hate. I could see through that smug smile. Beneath it all…the boy is still there. So is our connection.

The problem is…now that I can’t have Justin, I’ve never wanted him more

4 Stars

I am giving RoomHate 3.5 stars ‘coz I really kinda liked it! I mean, I’ve seen better ones, but this one is unique and sweet and sexy in its own way!

I admit it kinda started a little off for me (If you’re reading this right now and are feeling the same thing at the beginning, read on and get through the first quarter of the book! I promise it would get so much better!) Things began kinda slow and Amelia was just being apologetic for every single thing she does and I kinda hated it, honestly. On the other hand, Justin Banks, the hottie that he is, was just being plain DB at the beginning. So yeah. It wasn’t a good start at all and I was ready to DNF at 10%.

But then I kinda persevered some more and surprisingly things got really better. And I mean, really better! ❤ The thing I liked most with RoomHate is the character development of both Amelia and Justin. I love it when the characters would (a little not-so spoiler here!) grow apart for a period of time (like for a year or two) and then they’d see each other again and…you know the drill here, guys. So yeah, I liked the more mature Amelia and Justin in the second half of the story and things just got really good from then on. 🙂

I’d recommend this if you’re someone who likes childhood-friends-turned-lovers kind of stories, or if you’re into angsty characters because believe me, the angst in this book was way taller than Michael Jordan. Wait, where did that MJ comparison came from?

Anyway, it was a very pleasant surprise that I kinda liked how things turned out in this! Again, it started a little off but things kinda got okaaaay and soooo gooood! And Justine Banks was such a darling!

Nina Kennedy was alive…but not living…until she met him.

Planes, trains, heights…you name it, Nina was afraid of it and led a sheltered life ruled by irrational fears and phobias. When she moves to Brooklyn for nursing school, that life is turned upside down, as she develops an intense but unwanted attraction to her gorgeous roommate, who’s pierced, tattooed and just happens to be the smartest person she’s ever met.

Behind Jake Green’s rough exterior and devilish smile, lies a heart of gold. He makes it his mission to change Nina’s outlook on life. When he agrees to tutor her, they forge a bet and the stakes are high as Jake forces Nina to face her demons. He just wasn’t expecting to fall hard for her in the process.

What Nina doesn’t realize, is that Jake has been living his own private hell. Once he drops a bombshell, will their love survive it?

Told in two parts from both Nina and Jake’s points of view, Jake Undone is a standalone story and a companion to the novel, Gemini.

3 Stars

2.5 stars for this one! As much as I would like to love it, there are just some parts that I was really confused about. I mean, it wasn’t bad, it’s just very…forgettable. 😦

It was something in between “I liked it” and “It was ok.” I’ve been really thinking about my rating for this one because there are things I really liked about it but there are also things that are kinda meh for me.

It started out with Nina being afraid of a lot of things – like riding trains, taking the elevator, all those kinda stuff – and Jake, her new roommate, made it a point to help her get over each of her fears and falling for her in the process. It was a roommates turned lovers kind of story, you see.  The premise was cute and it wasn’t shallow at all. Both Nina and Jake have pasts you wouldn’t expect them to have, especially Jake.

However, I just found things to be all over the place and I thought there were just too many things happening at the same time? I dunno. I think I might be the odd one out here because everybody in Goodreads is loving it and even giving it 10 out 5! Man, I wish I loved it more. I tried, I swear.

P.S. The ending with Ivy, though, (you have to read it to know who Ivy is! Spoiler if I say who she is!) still doesn’t sit well for me. I still feel a little off about it so I guess it’s a huge factor why I didn’t like the book over all. Then again it was just me. If the rest of Goodreads loved Jake, Undone, you should prolly still check it out and see for yourself! 🙂

Anyway, that’s it guys! 2 of Penelope Ward’s books that I’ve read during the past week! I am looking forward to discover more new and old NA writers because they are a breeze to read, and just aren’t complicated at all! Ha! Perfect during study breaks! 🙂

I’ll see you next post, and as always – happy reading!

Book Review: Smut by Karina Halle

Screen Shot 2016-06-29 at 10.57.55 PM

Oh Smut! This book reminds me so much of the Tangled series by Emma Chase. And if you’re an avid NA reader like myself, you’d know that anything comparable to Tangled is close to perfection. And this one, definitely, is close to perfection.

I was in dire need for a quick and happy read when I decided to pick and read Smut. I initially saw Pearl‘s review of this a couple of weeks ago and I was instantly hooked just with the blurb so I decided to give it ago 🙂  I knew beforehand that it was something I would love, the sucker for NA that I am. And I wasn’t disappointed. In fact, I loved every bit of it!

Screen Shot 2016-01-08 at 10.48.37 PM

Smut is about two university students – Amanda and Blake – finishing both their degrees and taking up this particular writing class as a requirement. Blake and Amanda are a hundred percent opposites – Blake is your typical univ jock while Amanda is the oh-so-perfect straight A student. No common ground at all, except that they are both aspiring authors and both are apparently into geeky and nerdy stuff. They then get partnered up in final writing project and that’s where the real action begins.

Amanda Newland

Amanda is such an endearing character! I was able to relate to her in so many ways. She is very determined to finish her studies, she wants to be an author and she’s working so hard for it. She’s an overachiever – and she won’t allow anything to come between her plans of graduating from univ and becoming a sci-fi published author.19110249._SX540_Definitely a no-non sense kinda girl. I feel like we can be best friends! 🙂 But despite how she appears to be all firm and stiff, I like how she was able to show her other side – her smutty side, ha! – whenever she’s around Blake. Their contrast in personality definitely added to the chemistry between the two, and everything just goes flaming hot whenever they are together.

Blake Crawford

Man, this guy is hot. And a bookstore owner! Ha! That alone won me over and that alone made me swoon over Blake! Well. It’s technically his Dad who owns Crawford Books but he’s inheriting it so yeah, he’s a bookstore owner! 🙂

Blake is anything but sweet. He’s funny, he’s sexy. He’s raw. So raw. Like everything he says makes you wanna swoon over and surrender every inch of you to this guy! Yes, that hot! He’s practically slept with every woman in school and women seemed nothing to him. He doesn’t do relationships. He doesn’t do serious. Well, until he meets Amanda, that is. Again, what else can I say, this guy is perfect.

4 Stars

That’s a 4.5! 🙂 4.5 smutty stars for this one! Overall, I loved loved loved it! It was definitely what I needed during the time that I was all so stressed about school and I just needed something to pick me up, and pick me up it did! It’s definitely what an NA novel should be! 🙂

Highly recommended, guys!

Happy reading!
