Book Review: Champion by Marie Lu (Spoiler Free!)

Book Review

Finally! Finally!!!  I’ve waited so long to finish the Legend trilogy by Marie Lu and I finally did so today! And aaaaah. ❤ I’m so happy and ecstatic and I just have so many feels about how it all ended! Champion, the last and final instalment in the trilogy, is just perfection! However, since I want all my book reviews here to be spoiler free, I will try my best not spoil anyone here 🙂

Quick Stats

Title: Champion

Author: Marie Lu

Date Published: September 9th 2014

Series: Third and last book in The Legend Trilogy

My book format: Paperback, published by SPEAK

Goodreads summary:

He is a Legend.
She is a Prodigy.
Who will be Champion?

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic—and each other—and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps Elect while Day has been assigned a high level military position. But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them once again. Just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything he has. With heart-pounding action and suspense, Marie Lu’s bestselling trilogy draws to a stunning conclusion.

My thoughts

Skipping a review on Prodigy ‘coz I think it’s my least favorite in the trilogy. It’s not bad, but I guess I’m thinking that there’s a third book so whatever happens in Prodigy won’t really be what the ending will be. 🙂

Anyway, I just wanted to say that AAAAAHHH. THIS BOOK. IT’S FREAKING. AAAAAH. NO WORDS. IT’S SO PERFECT!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE MARIE LU!!! ❤ I hated, though, that I read it outside, with actual people seeing me actually reading! Ugh. Had I known that the ending was that perfect and heart breaking at the same time, I would have read it inside my room so I can sob, cry, and wail myself ’til I can no longer handle it! 😦 Sigh.

Day and June are my ultimate OTP, guys! They’re like my favorite of all time. Sorry to say, but probably more than I love Tessa and Will from the Infernal Devices – and you guys know how much I love love love Tessa and Will – so with me comparing June and Day to them, it only means that they’re so perfect and siiigh. I have no words. Again. It’s. That. Good.

I love how Marie Lu made the perfect combinations in this book – it’s so fast paced, with all that’s happening in the war between the Republic and the Colonies, and at the same time you don’t know what’s actually going to happen in the end! Are they gonna take away Eden again? WIll the Elector Primo and June be together in the end? And ultimately, IS DAY GOING TO LIVE? 🙂 Aaaah, these questions are all bugging my head until the last chapter and I was surprised how Marie Lu came up with the perfect ending! It’s not the most perfect ending for some, as I have seen reviews that aren’t satisfied with the way it all ended, but for me, it’s the best possible thing that could happen, and I love that it’s how it all wrapped up!

I especially loved the way Marie Lu writes. She’s so direct and she made the two characters relate well with the reader. I also love that each Chapter ends with a mini-cliff hanger that will make you flip the pages faster on to the next ‘coz you’re too intrigued by the last chapter 🙂

I also especially loved Day’s personality – how he is the perfect combination of  man who loves his family, who will fight for June, and who protects his Republic even to the extent of giving up his life ❤ Aaaah, Day. He’s just too perfect ❤

Lastly, my favorite part of the book is the last Chapter, where Marie Lu shows what happens ten years after. ❤ It’s the perfect wrap up and just the perfect ending! Sorry, I know I’ve said “the perfect ending” a million times in this post already, but it just is!!! I could rave about this book for forever but I don’t wanna spoil you guys! 🙂 I definitely recommend it!!!

On a reading slump! Nooo!

READING UPDATE

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I can’t seem to finish Champion, the third book and final installment of the the Legend trilogy by Marie Lu. Don’t get me wrong, though, I do love it, and aaaah, it’s probably one of my most favorite series of all time, but I’ve been meaning to finish it for the last three days but I just CAN’T! Somebody please tell me what is wrong with me?! 😦

Some excuses I tell myself to make me feel better:

1. I’ve been busy with family stuff. Had some family trips and family gatherings to attend to this past couple of days, so yeah, no time to read. (Even I am not convinced with this excuse! 🙂 )

2. Thesis. Though I am not really doing my thesis yet, I keep on thinking about it, and I keep on editing it in my head, and ugh, the thought of doing my thesis just wouldn’t go away!

3. Game of Thrones got in the way! Oh yes, this definitely is one of the reasons why I haven’t finished reading Champion yet! I just started watching GoT ‘coz a friend recommended it and I. AM. SO. HOOKED! Gah. I probably am going to make another blog post about it because I just have so many raves about it and it would definitely defeat the purpose of this post if I do it here 🙂 But yeah. GAME OF THRONES.

So yeah. Guess I got my answer there 🙂

Anyway, I am finally finally going to finish Champion today and I am preparing my heart to be broken. At least according to some comments in Goodreads that I saw. I still hope, though, that Day and June end up together ‘coz if they don’t, my world is defintely going be shattered 😦

So that’s it, I’ll se ya next post, and happy reading always!

Book Review: Legend by Marie Lu (Spoiler Free!)

Book Review Legend is the first book in The Legend trilogy by Marie Lu, followed by Prodigy and Champion.

Quick Stats

Title: Legend

Author: Marie Lu

Date Published: April 16th 2013

Series: First book in The Legend Trilogy

My book format: Paperback, published by SPEAK

Goodreads summary:

From different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths… Until June’s brother is murdered, and Day becomes the prime suspect. In a shocking turn of events, the two uncover what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths to which their country will go to keep its secrets.

I just realized now how very short and unappealing Goodreads’ blurb on Legend is! Nah. Anyway, it really doesn’t matter, so here goes my review.

My thoughts

Writing Style: Marie Lu’s writing style is just so clear and direct that I didn’t find it difficult at all to adjust into the world she’s created. Whenever I read non-contemporaries, like sci-fi and dystopians such as this book, I usually take time to crawl into the world of the characters and I am usually slow in adjusting. With this one, however, I was sucked into the world right away and the transition was so easy! 🙂 Marie Lu definitely knows how to write!

Characters: June and Day are the main characters: Day is the Republic’s most notorious criminal, while June is the state’s most valuable asset. I usually look for a good character development when I read and Marie Lu gave me just that. Gah! She’s woven both Day and June’s character so nicely and I know these two will just stay with me forever. I love how June is a very strong female character, and how she just seems to know everything about people by just looking at them. And I always find her funny and adorable whenever she calculates the time it takes for her to do things! You have got to read it to understand! 🙂 However, even if she exudes a very strong personality, the other side of her is revealed when she met Day and starts falling for him (wait, this isn’t a spoiler, right? We all know they’re going to fall for each other at some point, yeah?).June is definitely one of the best female characters I have read thus far and I just can’t help but adore her ❤

In the same way, Day’s character was woven by Marie Lu so perfectly! I just love him! Like, aaaah, Day is so perfect I am so fangirling while writing this blog post! 🙂 I love how day is so protective of his family and how he puts his family above everything else, even his own safety. He is so funny, and witty, and sarcastic and just plainly adorable! Even if he is the most notorious criminal in the Republic, you can however see how Day is never afraid of opening up his feelings to the extent that I sometimes think he is more of the emotional one than June is. Aah, Day, no more words for him. You have to read this trilogy, please, I assure you you’ll fall for him too!

Generally

Since this is the first book in the trilogy, I am fairly satisfied with how it ended. So many times in this book that I laughed, teared up, giggled, and actually sobbed. In fact, seconds after I finished reading legend, I posted this as my Goodreads quick review: Screen Shot 2015-04-17 at 9.39.35 PM It is a very very good first book which made me want to dive into Prodigy right away! 🙂

The Legend Series by Marie Lu

Four weeks ago, I posted in my Instagram account (@thebooklander) one of the series I am most anticipating to finish this year – which is the Legend Series by Marie Lu.

I was so ecstatic when I finally get to complete the series in my shelf, but I had very limited time to read for the last couple of weeks because of it’s finals week, so I had to focus on all my acads. I finished Legend early March this year, but I crawled my way through Prodigy, for reasons not at all related to the book, but because school just got in my way. I finally finished it about two days ago, and I am finally, FINALLY!, finishing this series today! Reading Champion now, and I am having a book hangover already even if I haven’t finished it yet. It’s. That. Good. You guys have to definitely, definitely, check this series out!

I am not going to give a full on review on this post coz I wanted to have a series review once I finish reading Champion. I kinda semi-spoiled myself already when I went through the comments in Goodreads, but,  I still don’t know how it all ends, so yeah.

Honestly, I am SCARED on how it will all end. I am terrified that June and Day may not end up together. I just won’t be able to take it if that’s how it’ll end, I will hate Marie Lu forever if it happens that way! 🙂 Nah, but seriously, I cried of heartbreak when Prodigy ended, and I just don’t want it to happen again in Champion. Please, Marie Lu, no! So there’s my quick little update on my reading. I’ll hopefully finish Champion tonight and come up with a series review in a couple of days! Happy reading everyone! 🙂

Keep calm, and read on!

Guess I’m ready for a new genre!

It is a fact universally acknowledged that I LOVE READING. (Yeah, I have always loved the “universally-acknowledged line”! Thanks, Jane Austen!). But to be honest, I am scared of trying out other genres as I’m always stuck with my historical romances, mystery/thriller-romances, contemporary romances and general fictions. I’m kinda scared of getting disappointed in a book, so as much as possible, I just stick with the genre I am most comfortable with. This year, however, I wanna try out something new and just expand my reading horizon! Yay! And just last night, I’ve decided that the new genre I’m indulging my self in is *drum rolls please* DYSTOPIAN!

It’s not super new to me, actually. I have read The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, as well as the The Pandemonium series by Lauren Oliver last year. And surprisingly, I looooved looooved both of them! However, I never had the chance to read other dystopian novels after The Hunger Games and Pandemonium ‘coz, I dunno, I guess I just reverted back to my same, old, comfortable, happy genre.

But last night while I was Booktubing, one series caught my attention because of all the good reviews it’s getting. I looked for it in Goodreads and hey, it’s getting a 4+ stars rating, too! Apparently, it’s so good nobody has anything bad to say about it. I am talking about non other than *another drum roll please!THE LUNAR CHRONICLES SERIES by Marissa Meyer!

cinder-2

I actually have never heard of Marissa Meyer before. Ever. But I guess I’m ready to take this big risk! (I am a huge author person! Versus a cover person or a title person or a plot person, etc.) Based on the reviews, this dystopian series is based on popular fairy tale characters, i.e., Cinder is based on Cinderella, Scarlet on Little Red Riding Hood, and Cress is based on Snow White. The twist, though, is that they are all cyborgs! I actually don’t know what to feel about that fact, because like I said, I have always been into the more realistic genres, but hey, whatever. I am so trying this series because, really, what have I got to lose?

I’m not even sure if it’s dystopian, I’m probably mixing up my genres. It’s a futuristic sci-fi novel, I believe. Yeah, that’s more accurate. But whatever. I’m reading it and I’m being really positive about this new venture! Cheers!

Happy reading, everyone!
